Maren set her handheld beside Terminal 4, logged in, and brought up her assigned queue.

Before she touched it, she opened her private file.

Six months of output variance from LUMEN's tertiary routing architecture. Deviations too small to register as meaningful in standard review: 0.01 here, 0.04 there, micro-fluctuations in calibration feedback no existing model connected to any known input variable. Individually negligible. Collectively unsatisfactory. She had been building correlation matrices against them for twenty-three weeks.

A response without a recorded cause.

That happened, sometimes. Internal cognition could trigger measurable affective movement without an external event. Memory residue. dream-state carryover. spontaneous neurochemical fluctuation. The system had categories for all of it.

But this did not sit inside any category cleanly enough to quiet her.

She scrolled farther back. Another event six days earlier. Another twelve days before that. Then three in one week, then none for nineteen days. Irregular spacing. Internal consistency. A pattern responding to something not in the room.

She marked the file for follow-up.

The action took less than a second: one touch on the terminal, flag shifted from routine monitoring to analyst review. She had procedural justification. Any multi-channel event with recurrent unclassified readings qualified. If anyone audited the choice, the choice would stand.

That was not why she looked at the mark after she made it.

Her terminal reflected her face faintly over the graph. Still. Focused. The expression she wore when something in the system had failed to explain itself on first pass.

Across the lab, someone laughed softly at a different screen. A chair rolled. Ventilation maintained its low constant rush. Through the far glass wall, the ocean remained gray and unreadable in the morning light.

Attached intake footage showed Elena on arrival to the Institute: narrow shoulders, dark hair pulled back, gaze lowered but not absent. Many lower-level residents acquired a vagueness around the eyes after prolonged recalibration, a learned inwardness produced by constant monitoring. Elena's intake gaze was different. Not diffuse. Directed elsewhere.

In the clip, waiting for instruction outside processing, Elena's right hand moved against her left forearm in a small repeating motion. The clinician had tagged it self-soothing repetitive behavior.

Maren paused the video and replayed the gesture.

Not repeating, exactly. Iterating.

She advanced three more clips from later months. The same hand movements appeared in different settings: during interview, while seated alone, once against the composite wall of her quarters. Then the sensation vanished back into baseline and the lab was only the lab again: filtered air, ordered screens, morning light on glass.

Maren opened a scheduling panel and requested a routine observation slot with Subject 017 for that afternoon.
